What's Actually in Our Free Seasonal Vehicle Check

A customer came in last spring on his way to a wedding on the Cape and asked if we could just look everything over before he put a few hundred miles on the car in a weekend. That is basically our free spring and summer vehicle check in one sentence, and it is worth knowing exactly what is in it before you ask for it.

What we are actually checking

The list is belts, fluids, tires, brakes, hoses, wipers and bulbs, plus the coolant system's protection level, the battery, tire pressure and tread depth. None of it needs special equipment. It needs someone who knows what a belt looks like three months before it snaps, and that is most of what a good pre-trip check really is. We do not add anything to the list just to find more work. If it is not on there, we are not charging you to look at it.

Belts and hoses do not fail politely

A serpentine belt usually does not just break. It glazes, it cracks along the ribs, it starts squealing cold on a September morning and quiets down once the engine warms up. All three are the belt telling you it is near the end. Hoses go the same way. They get soft and spongy near a clamp long before they split open on the highway. We check both by hand, not just by eye, because a hose can look fine from a few feet away and still feel wrong the moment you squeeze it.

Fluids and the coolant system's protection level

Checking fluid levels is the easy part. The part that actually matters going into summer or winter is the coolant system's protection level, which tells you the temperature the coolant will protect the engine down to or up to. A cooling system that is fine in April can be under-protected by August if it has been topped off with plain water at some point over the winter. It is a two minute test, and it is the difference between a normal hot day stuck in Providence traffic and an engine running hotter than it should.

Wipers matter more than people think

Wiper blades take a beating from the sun in the summer the same way they take a beating from ice in the winter. A blade that streaks or chatters is not just annoying, it means you are driving through rain with reduced visibility, and that is exactly when you need it most. We check the rubber for cracking and the frame for rust, and swap what needs swapping while the car is already up on the lift for everything else.

Tires: pressure and tread in the same visit

Since the car is already up, we check the tires properly instead of just kicking them.

• Tire pressure in all four, checked cold when possible, since pressure drops as the temperature outside drops
• Tread depth measured at three points across each tire, because a tire can look fine in the middle and be worn thin on the edges
• Uneven wear patterns, which usually point to something else going on, an alignment issue, a suspension part, or pressure that has been off for a while
• Valve stems and any sidewall damage from curbs or potholes

Battery, because nobody thinks about it until it dies

A battery that starts the car every morning in June can fail on the first cold morning in November, because cold weather is when a battery actually has to work hardest and has the least capacity to do it. We test it under load rather than just checking the terminals for corrosion, since a battery can look clean and still be nearly done.

What happens if we find something

If the check turns up something, we tell you what it is and what it costs before we touch it. Nothing gets done without you saying yes first. If you have an estimate from somewhere else for the same work, bring it in and we will match it or beat it, some restrictions apply. Anything we do carries our nationwide warranty, up to 24 months on parts and labor.

The check itself usually runs about 20 to 30 minutes, since the car is normally already up for an oil change or a tire rotation anyway. You do not need to book it as its own appointment, just mention it when you call.
